An internationally recognised expert in indigenous rights law and one of New Zealand's leading specialists in Māori issues – Chief Judge Joe Williams – will be the keynote speaker at WITBC ’08. Judge Williams (Ngāti Pūkenga, Te Arawa) is the chairperson of New Zealand’s Waitangi Tribunal and the youngest person to have been appointed Chief Judge of the Māori Land Court. The year 2008 has been proclaimed International Year of Languages by the United Nations General Assembly. The goal is to ensure that the importance of linguistic diversity and multilingualism in educational, administrative and legal systems, cultural expressions and the media, cyberspace and trade is recognised at national, regional and international levels.
