SYLVIA H. FENG – PTS, TAIWAN

Chief Judge Joe WilliamsSylvia H. Feng is the president and chief executive of the Public Television Service (PTS) of Taiwan.

Since 1992, Sylvia Feng has devoted herself to the promotion of public broadcasting in Taiwan. In 1997, she succeeded in rallying public support that brought about the passage of the Public Television Act in 1997.

In 1994, she started the first ever Indigenous TV Reporters’ Training Programme in Taiwan. Consequently, she produced the first indigenous news programme – Indigenous News Magazine – a ground-breaking move that guaranteed the strong presence of the indigenous people was an irreversible and indispensable part of the television scene.

In 1999, Sylvia Feng created the first and only documentary programme in Taiwan, Viewpoint, which is widely recognised as a leading force behind the rapid growth of documentary filmmaking.

As director of news, she also launched the evening news programme that featured in-depth reports focusing on important social, environmental, educational and cultural issues.

In 2001 and 2002, Sylvia Feng initiated two more training programmes for indigenous television specialists. She also persuaded the Indigenous Peoples’ Council to begin the process of establishing an indigenous television channel.

In 2005, ITV was launched and joined the Public Television Service – also known as the Taiwan Broadcasting System (TBS) group – in 2007. Sylvia Feng was appointed by the board as president and chief executive of PTS in December 2007.
